Our Bookshelves: A Light in the Attic

A Light in the Attic, by Shel Silverstein

Publisher: Harper

Grade Level: 3 - 8

Short Synopsis

As April is National Poetry Month it seems appropriate to highlight a collection of poems in this month's book review. A Light in the Attic is a collection of poems and drawings by Shel Silverstein. The poems are short and playful. But do not be deceived by their brevity. Their messages can have a depth that encourages young readers to think about the power of words.

Reading

A Light in the Attic addresses a wide variety of topics. Younger readers may benefit from reading with a parent who can select poems that might be cover more age-appropriate topics. Each poem is accompanied by an illustration that can help decode more difficult or nonsensical words.

Writing

Shel Silverstein provides excellent resources to encourage young writers. One resource is a guided writing and illustration activity for "Eight Balloons", one of the poems included in A Light in the Attic. Another resource is a Poet Tree activity to create your own collection of poems.
