Letter-by-Letter

I can remember how my mom helped me to learn to read.

Every day she taped a new word to an object in our house for me to find and learn. She had me read the back of the cereal box at breakfast. She sang silly sound and spelling songs like "Apples and Bananas" or "The Name Game". We played the Alphabet Game every time we went to my grandparents' house until I had the street signs and store billboards memorized.

She made learning to read fun.

But every child defines fun slightly differently.

Some like comic books and superheroes. Some like animals and nature stories. Others like superhero pets who save their families.

Some sing the words as they read. Some need absolute silence to concentrate on every letter and its sound. Others sing songs while they read silently.

Find what makes reading fun.
